Newspaper obit of 19 March 1938 [courtesy of J. Wittman via postal mail Feb 2006] DEATH CLAIMS JOHN W STRAW Former Rosebud Officer. Had Lived in State since 1882. Formerly a Rosebud County rancher and one-time peace officer, John William Straw, 70, of No 3 Jefferson Street, died at a local hospital Saturday morning of cancer. Funeral services will be held at Smith's funeral chapel Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock and the body will be sent to Forsyth where services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist Church with the Odd Fellows Lodge in charge. Mr. Straw was born in Milan, MO on Aug 4, 1867 and came to Montana with his parents in 1882, settling on the Rosebud Creek 14 miles from Forsyth. He was married to Maggie May Hayes on July 5, 1888 and was engaged in the ranching and livestock business in the Rosebud Valley until 1905. At that time he became engaged in the ice business established by Sid Irwin, Forsyth pioneer. Mr. Straw served as a deputy under Rosebud County Sheriff Bob Guy and later was for many years chief of police of Forsyth. He and Mrs. Straw came to Billings in 1928, purchasing an irrigated farm on the bench east of the city. They resided there until he became ill, when they moved into the city. Besides his widow, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. M. H. Frances of Forsyth; six children: Mrs. J. A. Kuhn of Casper, WY, Arrel N. Straw of Billings, William Straw of Forsyth, John Carl Straw and Harry A. Straw of Billings and E. Alva Straw of Fullerton, CA; 23 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. E. Alva Straw formerly was coach at the Livingston and Casper (WY) High Schools.
