Mr. William Clayton Straw, 74, of 1304 Lawndale Street, Niles, Mich., passed away following an extended illness at 12:39 p.m. on Thursday, August 12, at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind.
Born in Winamac, Ind., on August 23, 1924, he was a son of Herbert and Anna (Lebo) Straw. He had lived in Niles since 1951, coming from South Bend.
Mr. Straw retired after 20 years of employment with Bendix Aerospace, South Bend, and then was employed at the former Indiana Trailer Supply. He had attended Fort Wayne (Indiana) International Business College.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Niles where he was active in the Presbyterian Bridge Players. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Mr. Straw was a Veteran of World War II, serving as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, and was a member of American Legion Post #26, Niles. He was an avid sports fan, enjoying the Chicago Cubs and Bulls; but his greatest interest was following the athletic teams of his grandchildren, attending many sports events at Brandywine and Buchanan schools.
On October 6, 1951, at the First Methodist Church in Mishawaka, Ind., he was married to the former Joan A. Smith, who survives.
He is also survived by his children, Andrea (Jake) Thar of Niles, Linda (Larry) Johnson of Buchanan, Mich., Kathleen (Michael) Shelton and Julie (Danny) Udell of Niles; grandchildren, Cory and Andy Hubbard, Jamie, Lindsey, and Adam Johnson, Brandon and Joshua Hood, Nicholas and twins Michael & MacKenzie Shelton, and Chelsea, Casey, Noah and Cody Udell; a brother, Richard Straw of Winamac; nieces and nephews, Joan Strand, Alberta and Albert Straw, all of Winamac; and by several other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Russell and Donald Straw, Betty Simshauser and Lucille Strand.

Funeral Services for William C. Straw will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 16, at First Presbyterian Church, Niles with the Reverend Dr. Ronald H. Wakeman of the church officiating. Committal Services will be at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Niles, followed by the Veterans' Flag Presentation and Taps by American Legion Commander John McLaughlin.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles.

Contributions in memory of Mr. Straw may be made to The Foundation of the First Presbyterian Church, or to the Athletic Department of Brandywine Public Schools, c/o Athletic Director Jay Crouch.
