EUGENE WILLIAM STRAW
Memorial Services were held Friday, December 8, 1995 at.1:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Gridley for Eugene William Straw, 78, of Gridley, CA. He died Sunday, December 3, 1995 at Fremont Hospital in Yuba City, CA.
He was born December 26, 1916 in Mt. Washington (Kansas City), Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in Independence, Missouri in 1934. He worked several jobs until 1937 as a machinist for Witte Engine Works in Kansas City until he enrolled in the Missouri University School of Engineering at Columbia, Missouri in the fall of 1937. While there, he was a member of the University Pistol Team. In the summer of 1940, he received an appointment for Flying Cadet training with the US Army Air Corp. He served as a Flight Instructor at Stockton, CA; Luke Field, AZ; and Williams Field, AZ. In June 1942, he attended Four Engine Training at Sebring, FL. In October 1942, he flew a B24 to the South Pacific to an air strip at Iron Range, Australia on the northeastern part of Australia.
During his tour overseas, he flew with the 90th Bomb Group, 1st and 2nd Task Forces in the 5th Bomber Command, and then the 43rd Bomb Group. In two years, he completed 87 missions in combat and re- ceived the Air Medal with 3 Clusters, one Legion of Merit, and. a Purple Heart. He returned to the US on October 1, 1944 and served at Williams Field as a flight instructor until leaving the service on August 1, 1945. On August 6, 1945, he went to work as a pilot for Trans Continental and Western Airlines. In 1946, he was promoted to. Captain and flew for TWA until retirement on December 26, 1976, his 60th birthday. While working for TWA he was an active union mem-ber in the Air Lines Pilots Association. On retirement, he had accumu- lated 25,000 flight hours.
On June 6, 1941 he married Lucille Pearl Porter, whom he met at Missouri University. .He was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, MA since 1936; a member of Gridley Rotary; and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Post 5731 of Gridley.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Porter Straw of Gridley; and four sons, Lt. Col. Stephen Porter Straw of Union City, CA; Capt. David Allen Straw of Gridley; Capt. James William Straw of Scotts Valley, CA; and Major Richard Eugene Straw of Cambell, CA. He is also survived by one grandson and six granddaughters.
