ARTEMUS STRAW GIVEN HEARING - charged with burning fences of farmer Andrew Jones. A bloodhound put on the scent leads officers from the burned fences of Jones to the home of Straw - the arrest immediately follows.
Artemus Straw, a prominent farmer living in the vicinity of La Rue appeared for a hearing before Justice A. Amerine at 1 o'clock this afternoon charged with setting fire to and burning down the fences of farmer Andrew J. Jones.
For weeks wire fences have been cut and board and rail fences burned by someone, supposedly living in the vicinity. Early in the week Jones' fence suffered. The following night another fence was burned. Jones determined to run down the party responsible and called up Sheriff Sells, who secured a blood hound from Mansfield.
Arrangements had been made where by no one was allowed to approach the Jones burned fence after the second fire. Hence there was nmothing to confuse the hound when it was placed up on the trail. It at once started off and led Justice Amerine and Constable Willis Clark to the home of Farmer Straw. When Straw appeared the hound could scarcely be restrained, making every effort to get at him.
Straw was placed under arrest and take to La Rue for his hearing.
Mr. G.E. Mouser is prosecuting the case and F. E. Guthrey is defending Straw.
