Walter A. Straw
VERSHIRE'97 Walter Alan Straw, 95, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Blue Spruce Home for the Retired in Bradford. He was born July 5, 1907, in Vershire, the son of Frederick and Edith (Lake) Straw.
He attended school in Vershire and went to work on the family farm at a young age. He worked as a logger and a farmer.
He married Hazel Vivian Aldrich Sept. 10, 1933. They lived in Vershire and West Fairlee, prior to moving to Post Mills, where he logged for Malmquist Wood Products.
When his wife died Aug. 16, 1992, he returned to live in Vershire. He shared his home with his son-in-law, Wayne Brooks, who took care of him for nearly nine years. Most recently, he went to live with his son, Duane, in Ferrisburgh, for a year until he moved to the Blue Spruce Home for the Retired this past November.
Working with horses all his life, both on the farm and in the woods, he gained a great love for them. He also enjoyed sharing the countless adventures he experienced over the past century. He was a great storyteller and would gather his great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and reflect on days past. His affection for them was obvious and they in turn, truly loved him.
He was predeceased by his wife, and his care-giver and son-in-law, Wayne Brooks; and two sisters, Evelyn Griffin and Avis Straw.
Survivors include his son, Duane W. Straw of Ferrisburgh; three daughters, Marilyn Williams of Ascutney, Charlotte Brooks of East Barre, and Phyllis Brown of Bradford; 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Everett Straw of Chelsea; and several nieces and nephews.
At his request, there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 17, at 2 p.m. at the Post Mills Cemetery in Post Mills (Thetford), Vt.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Vershire Fast Squad, in care of Pat Barnes, The Mountain School, Mountain School Road, Vershire, VT 05079.
