Katharine M. Leavitt, 92, of Franklin Street died Friday at the Alzheimer's Care Center in Gardiner.
She was born in Dover, N.H., a daughter of Hugh M. and Celia Straw Lewis, was a 1924 graduate of Brunswick High School and later graduated from Westbrook College.
She married Charles W. Leavitt Jr. on Nov. 25, 1939, in Bath. Mr. Leavitt died Dec. 12, 1955.
Mrs. Leavitt was a proofreader at the Brunswick Record, worked at Curtis Memorial Library, at the American Cancer Society and later was a secretary at SAGE in Topsham. She retired in 1969.
She taught piano in her home.
Mrs. Leavitt was a descendant of Mayflower passengers John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. She was a member of the McLellan family of Gorham, whose early members were among the first settlers of Cumberland County.
She was a member of First Parish Church. She enjoyed knitting and reading.
A son, Hugh L. Leavitt, died in 1995.
Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Newman of Topsham, and a granddaughter, Katharine Leavitt of College Park, Md.
Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday at First Parish Church on Maine Street, with the Rev. Dr. William C. Imes officiating. Burial will be in Varney Cemetery in the spring.
