www.findagrave.com - "Published in Malden News (Malden, MA), Oct. 7, 1935: FINAL SUMMONS TO CHAS C. L. MOORE Nonagenarian Was Native of Chelsea, and Long Associated With State Bureau of Statistics Until Retirement 19 Years Ago When Wife and Son Died Charles Creighton Luther Moore, in his 90th year and a resident of Malden since he was three, passed away last evening at the Somerset, after an illness of about a month. He had been in a coma for a week and had been in poor health for more than a year. He was beloved by all who knew him and was familiarly called "C C L" by his friends. Mr. Moore was a native of Chelsea and was the son of Hugh Kelsea and Mary Ann Conner Moore. He came to Malden with his family when a babe and had since resided here. His father built the homestead at 348 Pleasant St., corner of Pearl, and the family lived there until a dozen years ago when the place was sold as the site for a block. Mr. Moore as a young man was with the American Steam Gauge Co. of New York and Boston, as a salesman. Later he was in the coffee business for a while and then was in the Quartermaster's dept. at the Navy yard for some years. In August 1894 he entered the State house in the Bureau of Statistics and remained there until 1916 when he was retired because of old age. Since then he has been retired. During the War of the Rebellion, he was not allowed to enlist but he was captain of the old Hayward Guards. He was also No four man on the machine gun in the Draft riots. Though not an enlisted man, he was pressed into service, being near the Boston armory when it was bombarded. The greatest sorrow of Mr. Moore's life was the death of his wife and son Hawley, within a few days of each other, during the flu epidemic 19 years ago. His wife was Miss Mary Adams Hawley, sister of the late Wm. D. Hawley, long deputy state auditor. Nearest surviving relatives are nephews and nieces, including Miss Celia C. Hawley, Clifton St., and Hugh Kelsea Moore of York Beach, Me. and Florida, who is assisting in taking charge of affairs here.
