Denver Post 29 November 2009 obit: Alma Elizabeth Straw STRAW, ALMA ELIZABETH Alma Straw died three days after her 96th birthday, on Nov. 18, 2009, at her Denver home. A Mass and memorial service will be held at St. James Catholic Church, 1311 Oneida St., Denver, at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dominican Sisters Home Health Agency, 2501 Gaylord St., Denver, 80205, or a charity of the donor's choice. Born Nov. 15, 1913, in Sacramento, Calif., she was the daughter of William and Carrie Conlin Garrett. Her brother, Eugene, was killed in World War II. She married Loren "Larry" Straw on Oct. 12, 1940, in Reno, Nev. They parented four children, moved and traveled in connection with his work with the Army Air Corps and United Airlines. Larry died in 1991 in Denver. Alma was a graduate of St. Joseph Academy Sacramento; Sacramento City Junior College; and San Jose State Teachers College (now San Jose State University). She later earned a master's degree in education from the University of Colorado. She taught kindergarten at Swansea School, Denver. Devoted to her Catholic faith, she served as a lector at St. James well into her 90's and ministered to the homebound throughout her life. She was an accomplished seamstress and pianist. Alma is survived by four children: Raymond (Lynda) Straw, Bloomington, IL; Mary Jeanne (Michael) Drury, Hillsboro, MO; Margaret (George) Roskop, Idaho Springs; and Dr. William (Ann) Straw, Los Altos, CA; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her remains were donated to the Anatomical Board of the State of Colorado. Skyline Funeral, 1001 Tejon St., Denver, was in charge of arrangements.
Alma married Loren Lewis Straw, son of Arthur Lewis Straw and Effie Martha Stephenson, on 12 Oct 1940 in St Thomas Aquinas, Reno, Nevada. (Loren Lewis Straw was born on 20 Sep 1912 in Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri, died on 27 Aug 1991 in Denver, Colorado and was buried in Donated to science.)
