bullet  General Notes:

Mary Moore O'Connor recalls the day of her grandmother Ann Bennett's funeral. It was raining very hard and she and her brother were sent to school; small children did not attend funerals. She remembers her father John Moore coming to school with horse and wagon to pick up her brother Ivan and herself and bring them to the Bennett Cottage where the family had gathered after the services. She remembers that all of the relatives seemed to be dividing up the household goods. Seeing that everyone was choosing something she spoke up and said she would like her grandmother's stool. It was a small 4 legged wooden stool made by Jeptha for Ann as she was a short woman and the kitchen had ceiling- high cupboards that she could not reach without it. Amazed at her audacity but somewhat chagrined a family member said "It's the only thing she has asked for. Let her have it." and so she went home that day with Ann's wooden stool and I (Jane O'Connor Foster) still have it to this day.
Mary Moore O'Connor says that her Grandmother seldom took care of her or her brother. When Agnes, Mary's mother, took to bed with illness or back trouble it was Grandpa Jeptha who came and cooked and watched over the young children. She remembers climbing on his lap and buttoning up his vest. He would get up and unbutton it rather than complain or scold her for doing something which obviously he did not care for. She said he never spoke harshly to them.
She also remembers him as a hard worker who never seemed to tire or work enough hours. When John Moore married Jeptha's daughter Agnes he went to work for his father in law on the farm but could not keep up the pace required of him by the old man who John Moore said "did not know the meaning of a day's work!"
