THE HAVENSVILLE REVIEW 30 JAN 1947 STRAW - SHAFFSTALL Nuptial vows were read Saturday evening, January 18, for Miss Maxine Straw of Wichita and Mr. Lowel E. Shaffstall of Belle Plaine by the brides father, the Rev. Herschel E. Straw of Harlan, Kan., at a lovely cere mony at the Evangelical United Brethren church. He was assisted by the Rev. R. L. Cortner. The bride was attended by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Loa Ruth Straw, as matron of honor and was given in marriage by her brother, Paul D. Straw. The groom chose Robert L. Hicks to serve as best man. Ushers were Charle s Markel and Jesse Hatfield Miss Margaret Oliver sang, "Because" "I Love You Truly" and "The Lords Prayer". and the traditional wedding marches were played for the proc essional and recessional. Miss Shirley Shaffstall and Miss Janet Leichh ardt were tapir lighters. White wool fashioned the brides street length dress which she wore grey snake skin accessories. Her bouquet was colonial nosegay of white carnations surrounding a lavender orchid. The dress worn by the matron of honor was pink wool and her accessories were brown. Her flowers were white carnations in a nosegay arrangements. The brides mother, Mrs. Herschel Straw wore royal blue with black accessories and dark pink carnations. The grooms mother was dressed in aqua blue with accents of black and her flowers were light pink carnations . Assistants at the reception at Esther Hall were Misses Doris Brown, Joyce Shoupe, Julie Fox, and Mrs. Robert Hicks. Mr. Shaffstall is the son of Mr and Mrs Virgin Shaffstall of Belle Plaine. He served in the Navy during the war and is now employed as an el ectrician. After a short wedding trip, the couple will be at home at 928 North Topeka, Wichita, Kan.

THE HAVENSVILLE REVIEW 18 Nov. 1943 ANDERSON -- STRAW Miss Loa Ruth Anderson of McCroken, Kansas and Lt. Paul D. Straw of t he Alexandria, Louisiana Army Air Base were united in marriage Monday e vening November 1, in the base chapel. Rev. Herschel Straw, father of t he groom officiated at the double ring ceremony. Miss Maxine Straw, sis ter of the groom was maid of honor and Lt. D. E. Williamson served as b est man. Mrs. Straw graduated from the McCracken high school and attended Hay c ollege. She is teaching at Ness City, Kansas and will continue with her s chool work. Lt. Straw graduated from the Havensville high school with the class o f '41. He entered the army cadet training October 20, 1942, and was com missioned a second lietenant(sic) in October 1943 at Lubback, Texas, an d is co-pilot of a Flying Fortress crew and will soon be sent overseas f or combat duty. Lt. Straw has many friends and school chums in and around Havensville w ho extend congratulations.

THE HAVENSVILLE REVIEW 15 April 1944 Second Lieut. Paul D. Straw is a prisoner of war of the German governme nt, his wife Mrs. Loa Ruth Straw, has been notified by the War Departme nt. He was copilot of a B-17 bomber and has been listed as missing in a ction since February 22. Lieutenant Straw is the son of Rev. H. E. Stra w, pastor of the United Brethren church at Mulvane.

OBITUARY Paul D. Straw, 70, died Saturday, March 19, at San Antonio, Tx., He w as a retired Major General in the Texas Air National Guard. Mr. Straw w as involved in a two plane crash while piloting his plane in an aerial p hoto session involving both his and another plane. The two planes bumpe d wings and crashed killing all four occupants of the two planes. Mr Straw was a son of long time minister Hershel Straw at Havensville , where the younger Straw graduated from grade and high schools, before e ntering the Air Force in 1941. He was a bomber pilot in Europe during W WII. His plane was shot down in combat, and he was a POW for 13 months b efore he escaped through Poland. Following his term in the Air Force he made appearances in the Topeka A ir Shows, flying P38 fighters. Survivors include his wife and family at S an Antonio, Tx.

Research of Matthew Cooperrider on Rootsweb. They were members of the United Brethern Church. He served as a minister, sunday school superintendent and teacher. He had been a Scout Master. He worked as an aircraft assemblyman and as a rural mail carrier. He liked to do woodwork on the side and she did fancywork. He was in the Army from Mar 6, 1917 to Apr 12, 1919 and served as a Private First Class in the 35th Division in a Military Police Company. They lived in Kansas at Wichita, Towanda, Elk Falls, Elk City, Jefferson, St. Paul, Rossville, Havensville, McCracken, Mulvene and Harlan. At the time of her report they lived in Bird City, Kansas.

Services for the Rev. Herschel Straw, 65, of Earlton, Kans., who died at Chanute, Saturday, December 21, 1963, were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 24, at Evangelical United Brethren church, Chanute. Burial was in Towanda Cemetery.
He was a retired EUB minister and was acting postmaster at Earlton. He was born June 14, 1898 in Towanda and was a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include his widow, Lillie; two sons, Herschel F., Huntsville, Ala., and Paul D., San Antonio, Texas., a daughter, Mrs. Maxine Shaffstall, Scottsdale, Ariz., a sister, Mrs. Ada Worthington, Wichita; two brothers, Cecil, Wichita and Floyd, Benton, Kans., two half-sisters, Mrs. Laverna Berner and Mrs. Katherine Hollis, both of Augusta an ten grandchildren.
