Darleen Ruth Straw, 76, of Union Lake, near Erskine, Minnesota, died peacefully Saturday morning, March 27, 2010, in the RiverView Care Center, in Crookston, Minnesota, after living with cancer for two years. Her husband, Harvey, and many of her family were at her side. Darleen was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 19, 1933, to Genevieve and Ralph (Leikeb) Leland. She began her education in the Minneapolis Public Schools, later moving with her family to Riverdale, ND and graduating from Riverdale High School in 1951. While living in Riverdale she met Harvey Straw, whom she married on July 3, 1952. Together, Darleen and Harvey raised four children- Susan, Patty, Lee, and William. The family spent several years living in Grand Forks and other communities before coming to Crookston in 1968. Darleen was an at-home mom for many years, and later she was employed in the offices of the City of Crookston until retirement. After retirement she enjoyed selling Mary Kay and Southern Living products. Harvey managed the Red Owl Grocery Store until 1976, when he purchased a grocery store in Sampson's Addition, renamed it Harvey's Market, and operated it very successfully until 1997. After Darleen and Harvey were both retired they moved to their lake home on Union Lake. They were members of the Rodnes Lutheran Church, rural Erskine, and former longtime members of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston.
Darleen was a devoted wife, homemaker, and loving and tireless supporter of her children; seen at all of their school events, concerts, activities and athletic games over the years. Her warm and charming home reflected her talent in decorating, sewing, cooking and crafts. Darleen possessed a lovely voice, which graced her home and the church choir. She passed that love of music on to her children and grandchildren. Additionally, she was known for her love of animals, caring for many family pets that enriched the family over the years. She and Harvey celebrated fifty-seven years of marriage last summer. Darleen will be very lovingly remembered and sadly missed.
Family members include her devoted husband, Harvey, who is living in the RiverView Care Center in Crookston; two daughters, Susan Straw Naffziger and husband, Brad, of Lutz, FL; Patty Straw of Grand Forks, ND; two sons, Lee Straw and wife, Laurie, of Bemidji, MN, and William Straw and wife, Jennifer, of East Grand Forks, MN; her beloved grandchildren, Hannah and Zachary Straw, Haydn, Liam, and Meaghann Harmon, Brandan and Robert Naffziger, and Sally and Joe Palmer, and Emily (Palmer) Perreault. Darleen also leaves a sister, Sandra Leland Swenberg, and husband, James, of Pittsboro, NC, a brother-in-law, William Straw, of Forsyth, MT; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Bay, of Forsyth; two nephews, Ronald Geist of Forsyth, James Daniel Swenberg and his wife, Jennifer Cavanaugh, of NJ; a niece, Heather Swenberg Craft, and husband, Jason, of Charlotte, NC; and two great-nephews, Braedon and Lucas Craft of Charlotte. Darleen was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Genevieve Leland.
A memorial service for Darleen Ruth Straw will be held at 7:00 pm, Friday, April 2, 2010, in the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston, Minnesota with The Rev. Peter Satren, of Erskine, officiating. Visitation with the family will be for one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be given in her memory to the Rodnes Lutheran Church.
