The Johnson Family of Hardin County on Gen Circles
Tribute to Charles R. Straw
When times were good, Charlie was a roup leader with the Marion Steam Shovel Co., a competent farmer. When times were tough, he was resourceful. At one time he owned and operated a milk dairy in Marion, Ohio. He sold it to the Swiss Dairy Family, the Isaly clan of Marion and Pittsburgh, PA. Isaly Dairy products and restaurants were located all over mid east USA for many decades.
In his late years, he lived in a very modest house with no electric or running water, with dark green shades, coal oil lamps. He made, for me and him, the best tasting pot of food from a ham hock and fresh yellow green beans. His house faced east, up against the railroad tracks. On the other side there was a makeshift "camp" for the hobos.
He moved into the 2nd floor dingy room of the toilets building for McKinley Park in South Marion. He was the park custodian. Sometimes he took tickets at the Marion Cinema during WWII.
His glass was always half full. Despite the loss of his dad when he was toddler, and the loss of wives and children he always remained a robust mental health.
Grandpa taught me never give in to the fire and brimstone preachers: "You're sinners; you're going to hell and damnation". He always fell asleep in church during such tirades.
Charlie believed in a God who was benevolent; who loved us, unconditionally.
He loved his children and grandchildren. He was wise, gentle, compassionate, charming. He made me feel comfortable, toasty. I see him slapping hi knee, "By jocks, that day...." and the story began.Charles and Jenny lived in the homestead which later became the Straw homestead when Jennie and Charles married. Much later this became the homestead of Jack Walter, Vivian "Walter" Johnson's relative. Eventually, she (Vivian)and Ivan Johnson and their children lived on this property.
Allegedly, Charles married a practical nurse, who cared for Jenny Straw after her two strokes, two years apart, 1922 - 1924. We have no name recorded, nor can we find court or divorce records. The children could not tolerate this woman, when Charles announced his intention to marry her, "all hell broke loose, we looked to Bernard for help in living elsewhere" (Bob Straw's written comment to the writer, James R. Rea, each child did move out. Where we are not sure except for Mabel. According to her son, Bill Jones (letter dated Sept. 3, 1997 to James Rea), went to live with the Maultz family.
