GENDEX: The infant toddler, Claude, acquires bacterial meningitis. Mattie (his mother) observes his ears hurt him. He tugs at them, saying "Hurts" (intelligibly). She has no idea he is dreadfully ill. Mattie writes a letter to Charles dated May 1893. In it she describes her local news. She dies the next month from Claude's infection. This double tragedy occurs without Charles' awareness. He was in Mexico, the area of Waco with a team of men. They are assembling a large steam shovel for the Marion Steam Shovel Co. Charles can not be reached by phone or telegraph. A letter takes two weeks. He written a letter to her, not knowing she is near death, in which he says, "Take good care of our boy baby."
