Note: THE HAVENSVILLE REVIEW 26 June 1947 Sgt. Herschel Straw of Havensville was one of four Kansans who attended the Garden Party for hospitalized veterans the afternoon of June 29 on the south grounds of the White House. President and Mrs. Truman headed the long reception line which included cabinet members and high ranking officers of the Army and Navy. General Dwight D. Eisenhower as usual made a big hit. Lucie Koch of Hutchinson wearing a print dress resplendent with Sunflower prints was assigned to extend hospitality to the boys from the Sun flower state.
