Clifton Floyd Strow, 92, died May 10, 2008, at his home in Cody.
He was born Nov. 23, 1915, in Mitchell, Neb. He came to Wyoming in 1918 with his parents in the back of a chuckwagon. His father worked for Johnson Cattle Co. of Texas and they were bringing cattle to the reservation.
Cliff attended school through the fifth grade in a one-room schoolhouse. At age 11 he ran away and met Joe La Crosse, an old French Canadian horse-trader. They gathered wild horses prior to the Depression in the Red Desert.
The horses were sold to CBC, a canning company that in turn sold the meat to the French government. After working for CBC until he was 18 he began catching horses, breaking them and selling them to ranchers around the Beaver Rim in Sweetwater River country.
At age 19 he moved to the Powell area with 25 head of horses. He started rodeoing in the Rocky Mountains, where he met his future wife Genevieve Newton. He broke horses for E.E. Newton, his future father-in-law, and also A.C. Newton, a future uncle.
He met Gen's brothers Don and Judd while working at Mammoth Hot Springs putting in water lines. On April 23, 1938, Cliff and Gen were married in Red Lodge. He then worked for five years on the tunnels west of Cody.
During World War II he served in the Navy working in construction with the Seabees. He was at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
He later worked as a carpenter in the Big Horn Basin and then worked for Husky Oil Co. for 27 years.
After he retired, he and Gen did some traveling but mostly he loved to stay at home and take care of the yard. He always had horses and enjoyed trading, breaking and selling them.
Cliff touched many people in his 92 years and will be missed.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, sons Richard, Fred and Larry Strow, five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be at Riverside Cemetery.
