Ralph Emerson La Vanway, 93, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, surrounded by family at his home on Chandler Road.
He was born in Duxbury April 11, 1912, the son of John and Eleanor (Backus) La Vanway.
He married Merle Eudora Straw in 1928; she died in 1972.
He married Maureen Mason April 1928 1975 in Plainfield.
Mr. La Vanway worked as a machinist for Lane Shop in Montpelier for 31 years, General Electric in Burlington as a tool maker for many years and retired from the state of Vermont in Montpelier in the 1970s.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Northfield. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, working in his wood and metal shop and playing the fiddle, and was a golden glove boxer and amateur inventor.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Fenton La Vanway and his wife Barbara of Underhill; two daughters, Kaye Waldron of West Virginia, Carol Okel and her husband Owen of South Carolina; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife; a daughter, Jeanette Bean; two brothers, Henry and John and a sister, Elinor.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted Monday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Kingston Funeral Home, 35 Slate Ave., in Northfield. Burial will take place at a later date in the Middlesex Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Berlin, VT 05641.
