Ronald Straw: Retired state trooper a man of principle: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Burton News, The (MI) - March 16, 2008
Deceased Name: Ronald Straw: Retired state trooper a man of principle
Funeral services were held March 7 for a former state police officer.
Detective Lt. Ronald Straw, who worked for the Flint Area Narcotics Group, died March 1 from complications of ocular melanoma cancer. He was 67.
Straw worked for the narcotics team from 1987 until his retirement in 1996.
He joined the state police in 1964, serving in Mount Pleasant, Ypsilanti, Flint and Pontiac. He also was police chief in Townsend, Tenn., from 1997 to 1999.
"He was really proud of some of the changes he had made down there," said his wife, Karolina. "He put that police department on the map."
Before he became a state trooper, Straw served as a U.S, Army medic in the Korean demilitarized zone for three years.
Straw's honorability extended beyond the workplace, his family said.
"He was a very principled man," Karolina said.
"He was very fair." His son Chadd Straw recalled walking into the kitchen of the family home to find his father, who then was working with the narcotics unit, sitting alone at a table with a stack of drugs, about 20 guns and about $800,000 in cash, he said.
"'About $800,000?' I asked him. 'Are you thinking any less than that?'" Chadd Straw said.
"He could have taken some of that money, and no one would have known the difference.
But he looked at me, and he said, 'I would know.' And that's all that mattered to him."
When Ronald Straw wasn't working, he loved to golf and bowl, said his daughter, Lainie Frye.
When he was young, his father left 25 cents on the piano for him every morning, because that's how much it cost to golf all day. That way, his father knew where he was all the time, Chadd Straw said.
That's when Straw's love of golf began - when he was 6 years old. He carried the love throughout his life, his family said.
He was a member of the Michigan State Police golf league for more than 10 years and traveled to Scotland and Ireland to play, Chadd Straw said.
Even after he lost his eyesight, Straw still could beat his family at Putt-Putt games, his wife said.
When he wasn't golfing, he was telling stories, Frye recalled.
"He had so many phenomenal stories," she said. "He would start talking, and he'd intrigue an entire room. Everyone stopped talking and listened to him."
"Everybody liked dad. He was a good listener and he made everyone feel welcome."
Contributions are being made in Straw's name to the Michigan State Police Fallen Trooper Memorial or to the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Straw leaves his wife, Karolina; children, Lainie Frye of Townsend, Tenn.; Chadd Straw of Burton; Scott Osborn of Flint and Erica Breaugh of Eagle; four grandchildren; sister, Deana Brassington of Evart; and brother Matthew Straw of Brainerd, Minn.
