bullet  General Notes:

Per recollections of Mary Moore O'Connor his great grand daughter: He was a farmer residing at Horicon, NY. He lived on the South Horicon Road in a house on the property where William and Ev Bennett now have a house. The original house sat close to the road and had a white picket fence around it. She remembers it was "orange" colored. She thinks Bill and Ev (Naar) Bennett's house, which sits back from the road, may have contained a part of the original house when they built their's.

He is buried in Elbow Cemetery in Brant Lake, NY.

Sources: Town records; Elbow Cem records; headstone in cemetery; Civil War enrollment list for Horicon, NY on internet and transcribed by Thomas Dunne for USGENWEB Warren Co Site. shows" Royal Z. In June he contracted lung disease and malarial fevers while on march from Yorktown to Richmond and was hospitalized. In June of '64 while at Fort Ethan Allen, VA he ruptured his left side while carrying posts to build the stockade and was sent back to Balfour General. "my extensive reading on the Civil War, I think I have pieced together great-great-grandfather's service record (with immense help from the pension record you sent)
His service record seems to be:
- Enrolled in 118th NYSV Infantry Regt. "The Adirondack Regiment", Co. D (with other guys from Warren Co.) on 27 July 1862, departing NY on 3 Sept 1862
- Manned the defenses of Washington, DC until April 1863
- (118th NY) participation with Reserve Brigade of 7th Corps at the Siege of Suffolk, VA from 11 April-4 May 1863. Likely no combat seen outside of artillery barrages. This was primarily an artillery battle.
- Likely involved in the skirmishes at Antioch Church (near Windsor, VA) and Baker's Crossroads after the siege was lifted. This would have been his only combat experience.
- 118th NYSV transferred from 7th to 18th Corps in June 1863. He became ill that same month during the Peninsular March from Yorktown (unlikely to Richmond as it did not fall until 1865), remaining in hospital until April(?) 1864
- Furlough likely due to health reasons in April-May 1864*
- Duty at Ft Ethan Allen (Arlington, VA) (probably as a veteran reserve '96 meaning too ill serve) and subsequent physical injury in June 1864*
- Discharge in August 1864
* These activities prevented him from participating the bloody Overland Campaign and the embarrassing Bermuda Hundred situation with the Army of the James.
In the end, his battle service was very limited, but his situation was very common. More soldiers in the Civil War succumbed to illness than battle injury. He was fortunate to survive in any case."
