bullet  General Notes:

From Barbara Honkala 11/26/01:My Maine Heritage Web site
Will's middle name was originally Amos for his gr. gr. grandfather, but his gr. aunt Agnes Straw (Hastings) Straw (Mrs. W. O. Straw) who had no children of her own, became Will's and his brother Rob's benefactor, and requested that Will's middle name be changed to Straw.

William attended the East Bethel school, then Gould Academy, graduating in 1918. he went to the University of Maine for two years, studying agriculture. He was a partner with his father, George, and brother Robert, in running the G. K. Hastings & Sons 600 acre farm in East Bethel. They sold broilers, butter, eggs, and potatoes, and in the winter they cut and sold pulp wood. Bill was a good carpenter and electrician, and often did electrical work for people in the community. He took up land surveying in the late 1930s, and built up a good business. he would have eventually left the farm partnership, but his life was cut short by a tragic boating accident while returning from a hunting trip with three close friends. He and two others were drowned when their boat's motor quit, and the boat was broached in high waves during an October squall on Lake Umbagog, a shallow lake notorious for its danger during rough weather.

Bill was a Mason, a Patron of the Eastern Star, a member of the Alder River Grange, and the Fish & Game Association. He served as moderator at town meeting several tims. He enjoyed hunting, canoeing, and camping. He also enjoyed driving and took his wife on a trip every fall somewhere in northern New England to celebrate their anniversary. To while away the long hours on the tractor while plowing he would memorize Kipling and Service poems. he also had a talent for imitations and delighted his family with comic renditions. He was a good father, husband, and neighbor.
