Pension Papers
Daniel Straw of Lyman, ME aspplied for pension at age 85 yrs on 7 Aug 1832
"In the October of the first yr of the War of Revloution, I enlisted at Sommersworth in the state of New Hampshire into Capt Eaton's Co... Moses (Campson ? of D.....Garrison was Lt; we were stationed at Portsmouth, NH until the spring following after the breaking up of the river, we returned home in boats. I served (blacked out) in months and think I contributed for that pension.
Col Wingate of Dover, NH I think was Colonel In the autumn of 1776 I think it was, I enlisted into Capt Sam'l Wallingford's Company three months) we [about 20+ men] marched to Pittskill ? [Fishkill] in the state of NY where we were stationed and at the expiration of our services we were dismissed. I returned home in the spring of 1777...sometime in the summer of 1777 I enlisted for four months in Gen Starks Brigade in the compnay that was commanded by Ensign Warren, the Captain's name I think was Francis, he left us at Stillwater at the time of the battle, but our compnay was not engaged in it. I think Col Eram/Esam of Dover commanded our regitment. I was at Saratoga when General Burgoyne surrendered his army to the Americans and at the expiration of our term of service we were discharged near Fishkill below Albany in the state of NY...my whole services were one year and one month.
I was born in Amesbury, MA in the year 1747. When I entered the army I belonged to Sommersworth, NH and have resided in Lyman in the state of Maine about forty years. I enlisted voluntarily into the army and served as above stated. There are no clergymen in the town where I reside and I have but little opinion of their honesty anywhere. I know of no person living that was in the service with me." [statement given to John Mussey, Clerk of the district court for Maine District.]
