Margaret "Fern" Hardin, 89, of Stites, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, at Syringa General Hospital in Grangeville, surrounded by her family. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Fern was born July 24, 1918, in Burley, Idaho. She was the second child of Edward "Red" and Myrtle Tholl Straw. Her siblings included Bob, Vinal, Vivian, Dick and Burley.
Fern grew up and attended school in Declo, Idaho. When she was in her teens the family moved by horse drawn wagon to the Salmon River area in Idaho where they gold mined, worked for ranchers, rode horses, and swam. While living in this area she met and married George Hardin at White Bird. Their life took them from White Bird working on the Hardin Sheep Ranch, to dry farming at Burley; to a ranch at Pleasant Valley; and finally they settled on the South Fork of the Clearwater River for the rest of their lives.
They had seven children, Marlene, Vivian, Vern, DeAnn, Vinal (General), Stanley, and John. These children brought them much joy, many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends, be it at one of the monthly birthday dinners, family reunions, holidays, picnics in the park, or working together in the fields or woods.
Fern was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin, In-Law, and Friend. Besides being the very best homemaker, cook and mother, she was a restaurant owner, cafe cook, and worked with the Older American Program for the U.S. Forest Service.
Her greatest joy was to have her home filled to past capacity with babies, kids, family, and friends, who were hungry or not, that she could cook for. Her candy-making and popcorn balls were famous and many a package made it to the post office for those who could not make it home for the holidays. Her other loves were fishing, camping, traveling (if there was a car going, she would be in it), rock collecting, tying quilts, gardening and tending to her flowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband George in 1973, both parents, her siblings, and her son, Stanley.
She is survived by her children, Marlene Woodall and DeAnn Lyons of Stites; Vivian (Jim) Young of Bayview, Idaho; Vern (Doloresa) Hardin of Juneau, Alaska; Vinal "General" (Kathleen) Hardin and John (Dixie) Hardin of Clearwater; her grandchildren, Valorie, Scott, Virginia, Jonna, Charles, Selena, Chico, Bob, Roy, Christy, Steven, John Wes, Darcy, their spouses, and many great and great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials in Fern's name may be made to the Kooskia Ambulance Fund, the Clearwater Rebekahs, or a charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, at Trenary Funeral Home Chapel with Interment at Pine Grove Cemetery, both of Kooskia. Reverend Luann Howard will officiate and Bob Beach will assist. Music will be by Cinder Dahler. A covered-dish dinner will follow at Kooskia City Hall.
