Winnifred Vivian Straw
General Notes: (Per her son T. Walden via email Dec 2008) "Called Vi or Viv.... She worked as a welder on Liberty Ships at the start of the war but decided she should serve in the same branch of service as her brother Vinal STRAW, the US Marine Corps. She was a parachute rigger in the Marine Corps and met her husband who was also a Marine parachute rigger. She may have chosen to volunteer for parachute rigging school because brother Vinal was in a parachute jumping combat unit. It would be like her to want to make good and sure his fellow Marine's chutes were packed safely. Her nickname in the Corps was 'IRISH' " Winnifred married Joseph Thomas Walden, son of Samuel Gateystone Walden and Anna Theresa Sweeney. (Joseph Thomas Walden was born on 31 Jul 1922 in New York, died on 21 May 2010 in Grangeville, Idaho County, Idaho and was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery Kooskia, Idaho County, Idaho, USA.) |
