This stampless letter has a circular date stamp for GILMANTON N.H., a matching PAID, a handwritten Paid 3 cent rate, and is addressed to Miss S.M. Bennett ( Susan Marcia Bennett), Parsonsfield, Maine, and is a three page letter written by Agnes M. Straw. The headline is Gilmanton, Sept 7, 1851. Some abstracts:
"After the hurry and confusion of packing I 'bid adieu' to my much loved home to my Father, Mother, Brothers and Sisters and started for Gilmanton four weeks ago last Thursday morning, in company with my good brother David and cousin Nahum ."
"It is a beautiful place here how I should like to see you here. David and I are perfectly contented, have not been home sick any at all yet."
"Our school commenced last Monday. I like very much my studies are Latin French and Algebra and I take lessons on the piano. Our Teachers names are so odd that I will tell them to you. The Preceptor's name is Nickerson. Miss Swift is the Preceptress and Mr. Stebbins and Pitts are the assistant Teachers."
(MY NOTE: Susan was born c1848 the d/o Wm and Betsey F. Bennett. She had siblings as follows: Ann 1846; Flora 1850; Willis 1852; Frank 1855; Mary 1857 and Ada 1859. This family appears in the 1850 and 1860 census res. Guilford, Piscataquis County, ME)
