He was made Quartermaster in the Bethel militia on Dec. 5, 1821.In 1827, he was a highway surveyor.The street along the east side of the common was once called Straw Street because the men who owned the houses on this street, O'Neil, W. For many years he was the blacksmith of Bethel Hill, where he was extensively engaged in agricultural pursuits in connection with his trade, and his death occurred there April 5, 1859. His wife, who was before marriage Abigail Straw, bore him eight children: Gideon Alphonso. David Robinson, John Decatur, Daniel Straw, died young; Solon S.. died young: Moses Mason, Agnes Straw and another Daniel Straw.
