per Rootsweb research of C. Peterson John was the Bethel Hill blacksmith for many yrs .Also trustee and treasurer of the Gould Academy and holder of various town offices including coroner; quartermaster of the first regt, 2nd brigade, 1st division of ME State Militia, discharged 1831

He was made Quartermaster in the Bethel militia on Dec. 5, 1821.In 1827, he was a highway surveyor.The street along the east side of the common was once called Straw Street because the men who owned the houses on this street, O'Neil, W. Robinson, Moses Mason, and John Hastings all were married to Straw sisters. (per research of Toby Harris on Rootsweb)

John, third son and seventh child of General Amos and Elizabeth (Wiley) Hastings, was born in Bethel, May 6, 1796. For many years he was the blacksmith of Bethel Hill, where he was extensively engaged in agricultural pursuits in connection with his trade, and his death occurred there April 5, 1859. His wife, who was before marriage Abigail Straw, bore him eight children: Gideon Alphonso. David Robinson, John Decatur, Daniel Straw, died young; Solon S.. died young: Moses Mason, Agnes Straw and another Daniel Straw.

John married Abigail Straw, daughter of Lt. Gideon Straw Jr and Mary Robinson, on 25 May 1820 in Newfield, York County, Maine. (Abigail Straw was born on 24 Mar 1799 in Newfield, York County, Maine and died on 7 Nov 1874 in Bethel, Oxford County, Maine.)
