John Smith Bennett
General Notes: John had only one child [Maggie] who died very young. He helped build the stone library in Brant lake which sits at the pond's edge. It was completed in 1907 and Mary Moore O'Connor thinks he may also have built the stone gates that marked the front entrances to the Pebloe Hotel and still stand where the Chippawah Cottages are now. She says his brother Clayton most likely helped him. She further states he did the stone work on the front porch of the farm where his brother Jeptha Bennett and wife Ann lived. He also helped John Franklin Moore build his log house (BobGene) [Did John make the spool desk that his brother Jeptha's great grandson Nick O'Connor has?] John married Rose Hayes, daughter of Irenus Stillman Hayes and Mercy A. Handee, on 24 Dec 1883. (Rose Hayes was born on 5 Apr 1868, died on 1 Mar 1925 and was buried in Brant Lake Cemetery in Horicon, New York.) John next married Grace Bolton, daughter of Valentine Bolton Sr and Rosette Howe, in 1925 in Prob Horicon, NY. (Grace Bolton was born in Nov 1877 in Horicon, Warren County, New York, died on 12 Jun 1951 in Chestertown, Warren County, New York and was buried in North Brant Lake Cemetery in Brant lake, New York.) |
