Obituary Daily Times - STRAW, Clare C; 66; Waitsfield VT-Columbia MD; Columbia Flier; 2005-3-10
Clare C. Straw of Columbia died March 3 at Howard County General Hospital. He was 66.
He was born Nov. 11, 1938, in Waitsfield, Vt., and was married to the former Eileen Nicholson on April 23, 1960.
Mr. Straw began a long career in the construction industry in 1959, working as a surveying party chief on the Niagara Power Project where water was diverted at night from the falls to create power.
In 1960, he moved to northeastern New York to help build Atlas Missile sites. His most lasting memory from that period was that for several days in October of 1962, while the project was still in progress, some of the sites contained missiles that were aimed at Cuba, family members said.
His life-long interest in bridges began in 1963 when he joined Higgins Erectors and Haulers in Buffalo, N.Y., as an assistant project manager in its bridge building division. In a short time he became a project manager and worked on building and rehabilitating bridges throughout western New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. His favorite projects were the rehabilitation of a historic suspension bridge in Wheeling, W.Va., and the building of an award-winning bridge in Laceyville, Pa.
After moving to Columbia in 1991, Mr. Straw joined Fort Meyer Construction in Washington as a project manager, and later became the manager of the bridge division of Civil Construction. In both positions, he built and rehabilitated bridges in the district, Virginia and Maryland. He was excited about working in the nation's capital and was especially proud of his work on a bridge that runs through the new Washington convention center, members of his family said.
The Straws were charter members of Friendship Lutheran Church in Amherst, N.Y., and Mr. Straw served as its president for several years.
He was active in starting the Christie Matthewson Little League organization in Amherst in the early 1970s, serving as the league's first treasurer and managing a team for five years.
In recent years, he was an active member of Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, serving as a trustee. As such, he was involved in a project that made the church accessible to handicapped individuals.
Besides his wife, he is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Mary Straw of Medford, N.Y.; son, Scott Straw of Baltimore; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Joseph Krzyzanowski of Ellicott City; step-mother, Emily E. Straw; brother, George White; sister, Susan Campbell; mother-in-law, Lucille Nicholson of Ellicott City; and seven grandchildren.
The Rev. Luther Starnes presided over services March 7 at Gary Memorial United Methodist Church in Ellicott City.
Interment will be March 12 in White Chapel Cemetery in North Tonawanda, N.Y.
