per pension papers he first applied for pension when he was 55 yrs old on 27 Mar 1819.[It must have dropped for he applies again] He was a Private in the company of Capt Rowell, Regt of George Reid. He enlisted April 1781 from Epping, NH for 3 years and served until June 1783 [about 2 years] at which time he hired Thomas McNeil who was accepted in his stead who served the reaminder of the 3 years. On 24 Feb 1821 he again applied and in May gave testimony as to why he needed his pension. "I am by occupation a farmer but due to my age [61y 10m] and infirmities I am unable to do any work to support me. My wife Sarah aged 53 years being dropsical and under the Physician's hands. My wife broke her leg to peices four years ago...3 years ago a cow died and I sold the hide for $3.....I have no children at home with me except those that are of age and under no obligation to support me in any manner but I am justly indebted to them for services rendered to me...my son Edward age 26 being a cripple so much so he is not called upon to pay taxes or do military duty..unable to support himself...and Eleanor my daughter age 24 years..she is in tolerable health has assisted us since of age so there I quietly owe her for services......Abigail age 22 years healthy helps support us but under no obligations...I am justly indebted to her for services as we would not live comfortably without her and her sister. I am owing physicians, store keepers and merchants to the _______of about one hundred dollars or more..I have not in any way disposed of any property sicnc I was dropped from the pension roll with the intention to obtain my pension again but have only made some little shifts to live such as made a little butter and exchanged for bread corn as my place will not yield enough to support as my land is ledgy, gravely broken and frosly [I think this means not well irrigated and of poor soil] land of little value...costing as much as the income is worth to carry it on.."
[this is a schedule of his propety:] 100 acres of land worth $166.00...1 cow and 3 yearlings worth $30.00 and household furnishings worth $30.00 for a total worth of $216.00....
