VIROQUA, Wis. " Lola Bestul, 67, of Viroqua died Tuesday evening, April 20, 2004, at Bethel Home in Viroqua. She was born April 12, 1937, in Almond, Wis., to Milton "Bud" and Hilda (George) Abbott. Lola grew up in Almond and Fort Atkinson, Wis., cultivating interests including reading and music. She graduated as salutatorian of the Almond High School class of 1955. In the fall of 1955, Lola began studies in library science at Central State College in Stevens Point. She was engaged to Robert Bestul later that year, and they were married June 9, 1956. Lola and Robert's endeavors focused on cultivating music and fine arts in their community, with Lola providing piano and vocal instruction and Robert teaching high school and junior high band. The couple sang throughout the years in church choir, with Lola as a frequent soprano soloist while Bob served as director. They shared this lifetime devoted to music with their three children in Spring Green (where their daughter, Kari Kay was born in 1958), Wisconsin Dell (where their daughter, Kris Ann was born in 1961 and their son Kurt Abbott was born in 1962), and finally Viroqua. Lola delighted audiences with vocal performances in musicals, Sweet Adeline's, quartets and more. Her solos and duets, accompanied by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Choir and organist, helped add resonance and meaning to worship and church holidays over many years. From 1981 through 1994, Lola enjoyed working as a teller at the State Bank of Viroqua. During the same period, Lola delighted many children as a clown and face painter at local events.
In retirement, Lola and Bob continued their support and participation in community music and fine arts events. The couple also enjoyed travel to Europe, especially Norway and locations around the United States, as well as continued devotion to music at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Viroqua cultural and arts events. Throughout her years, Lola could also be counted upon to brighten any day with her infectious smile and her well-timed, self-deprecating humor.
She is survived by her husband, Robert of Viroqua; daughter and son-in-law, Kari Bestul-Schultz and Dan Schultz of Wisconsin Dells; daughter and son-in-law, Kris and Dennis Torkelson and their daughters, Sarah and Hannah of River Falls, Wis.; son and daughter-in-law, Kurt and Libby Bestul and their daughters, Hattie and Sallie of Divide, Colo.; her mother, Hilda Abbott of Wautoma, Wis.; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Betty Abbott of Fremont; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Betty Abbott of Plover, Wis.; and sister-in-law, Donna Kahler of Kaukauna, Wis.
