Moody via e-mail July 2007 - Notes on Elisha Cady: History of Stowe, VT pub 1934 First settlers arrived 1794, and Josiah Hurlbut built dam in 1796 two years after, on the Waterbury River at location known as Mill Village. Elisha Cady and Ira built the first tannery in Stowe 1806 . Their output was leather for the use by the Stowe people to make boots, shoes and harnesses, as all leather articles were made by hand in the homes. Stowe Census Elisha Cady 1820;1830 1840 .
