ASCUTNEY - Wilbur K. Williams, 75, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Mount Ascutney Skilled Nursing Facility following a long illness.
He was born June 10, 1929, in Groton, the son of Arlene (Darling) Webster and Earnest Williams. He was the stepson of Newell Webster and Carrie Williams.
He was a 1947 graduate of Windsor High School, where he was the first male to take a college course in bookkeeping. Out of high school he worked at the Windsor Feed and Grainery as a bookkeeper.
Mr. Williams married Iverna Blood on Oct. 4, 1947, and the couple had three children. He married Marilyn Straw on Jan. 30, 1964, and the couple had one son together.
He was a dairy farmer for many years. He earned a certificate from Grahams Veterinary School, and owned farms in Newbury, in Hadley, Mass., and later a farm and market in Leydon, Mass. After moving back to Vermont, he and his wife owned and operated The Top Hat Restaurant in Ascutney from 1970 to 1987, and The Kettle Restaurant in Ascutney for six years. After retiring from the restaurant business, he worked at Suburban Propane painting tanks and other grounds work, for the State of Vermont mowing roadsides, and as the groundskeeper for the John P. Larkin Golf Course in Windsor.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Grange, Post 541.
He enjoyed helping out at The Johnson Sugarhouse. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, walking, gardening, animals and listening to country music.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Marilyn Williams; eight children, Larry Williams, Wilbur "Cricket" Williams II, Gary Fairbrother and Kent Fairbrother, all of Ascutney; Patricia Wells, Cindy Johnson and Stacey Hussey, all of Windsor, and Lonnie Fairbrother of Corinth; 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; one nephew and an aunt.
He was predeceased by a sister, Rachel Adams, and a son, Delmore Fairbrother.
There will be no calling hours.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Ascutney Union Church on Route 5.
