bullet  General Notes:

Not much is known of William's origin. One researcher (John Austin) says he was born in Ireland, perhaps Co Tyrone...... or Essex County, New York.... and another says Shoreham, VT. A family bible was found and the dates in it confirm his DOB, DOD and date of marriage [but do not list POB or POD] Census records record his movement and the bible shows he married twice. It also gives the names of his children and their birth dates. Also some of their dates of death. This information passed to me via mail in Sept 1999 and is the research of B.Bennett Bauman his great great grand daughter. According to John Austin;" William is said to have served in the War of 1812. He was at Ticonderoga in 1850 and Kingsbury, Washington Co, NY in 1855. In Warren County Home records of his son Milton, William was called a temperate farmer b. at "Shoram", Vt. He was listed with son William at Ticonderoga in 1875, called farmer and widower, ae 87, b. Essex Co." B.Baumann researched the military records and found a William Bennett who "shot himself in the foot while stationed at Lake Erie site during War of 1812." Family lore: (Mary Moore O'Connor) overheard a conversation when she was very young of her mother, Agnes Bennett Moore, telling another unknown adult about "someone in the family that had shot themselves in the foot to escape fighting in the War" William who married twice had a total of 21 children and per Beverly Baumann when the family lived in Ticonderoga they were referred to as the "21 Bennetts of Ti"...

Various trees on the internet name his parents but none are documented
e.g "When William Bennett was born on February 18, 1793, in Shoreham, Vermont, his father, Benajah, was 56 and his mother, Zerviah (Crane), was 51. He had 11 sons and nine daughters. He died on March 9, 1878, in his hometown, having lived a long life of 85 years." [with no source given] - Researcher: Cheryl Dean
Several; other trees claim his parents were Timothy and Lucretia (Pollett) Bennett (I Jane O'Connor Foster have multiple DNA matches with Benajah Bennett descendants)

That on or about the sixth day of September A. D. 1914 while in the service of the United States at a place called Plattsburgh in the State of New York under the immediate command of General McComb he received the following injury to wit that on the night of the 2nd of September A. D. 1814 this deponent received orders from his Captain Silas Sayre to warn out members of the said company one to muster at 8 O'clock on the following morning for service at the house of Doctor Levi Wilcox at a place called the Street in Ticonderoga aforesaid that the members of the company were widely scattered and that this deponent was engaged all that night on foot in warning out the said company and that by 9 O'clock the said company on the following morning were upon the appointed ground and marched for Plattsburgh aforesaid. That at the time the company marched the weather was mild and pleasant and this deponent in common with many others of his company was lightly clad: that on the morning of Sunday following this deponent with his company marched into Plattsburgh aforesaid: that at one or two O'clock Monday morning this deponent's company were turned out and paraded but the alarm proved to be false but at sunrise the company received orders to march to Beekmantown to repel (sic)l the advance of the British troops that this deponent participated in the said battle of the sixth of September

That this deponent was then stationed with his company about five miles south of said Plattsburgh at Salmon River where on or about the 9th or 10th of September this deponent was discharged verbally and honorably by his captain Silas Sayre on account of sickness and inability to perform further military duty and this deponent further says that from the Sunday morning when he entered Plattsburgh aforesaid until Tuesday night following he had nothing to eat except a part of a card of gingerbread that from the time he started from home until his discharge as aforesaid he slept either upon the ground or the floors of out houses without blankets or covering. That this deponent from the great fatigues he underwent and from exposure at said Plattsburgh contracted a severe cold and sickness which finally resulted in a cough which continues to this day and in rheumatism which is located in the right shoulder and arm and in the back and hips of this deponent. And this deponent further says that he was well and hearty and never had either a cough or a rheumatic pain previous to the time he went to Plattsburgh as aforesaid.
