Katherine Ursula Puerner's Obituary:
Translation of her obituary in the German newspaper at Jefferson WI., by Mrs. H.H Zilm:
"Katherine Ursula Thomas was born July 2, 1825 in Gopfersgrun, Bavaria. Her youthful years were with a family by the name of Christian Leers, living in a baronial castle or knight's manor house.
As a young woman, she established a millinery and dress making business in Wunsiedel, which she conducted until her marriage to John Adam Puerner and Jan. 1, 1848 at Argtberg. Following this they lived first in Leutenberg, then in Grafenreuth, Germany and in 1853 left for America, settled in Jefferson, Wis. and were among the earliest and most respected pioneers.
They became the parents of eleven children, of whom, one, a girl died in childhood, and a son George, one of three born in Germany died on July 1, 1906.
Mrs. Puerner was called to her Eternal home very suddenly, through a heart attack, on Jan. 18, 1907 at her home, while her daughter, Mrs. B.H. Straw, who had been making her home there, was caring for her. Mrs. Puerner was a typical German "Hausfrau" (housewife), chiefly concerned in the welfare of her family and husband, a devoted wife and faithful mother. Toward neighbors she was always lending a helpful hand and very friendly. All who knew her will cherish a friendly memory of her many fine qualities.
Her husband, three sons: Henry, Martin and John, six daughters: Mrs. Catherine Meyer, Mrs. G.J. Loetz, Mrs. B.H. Straw, Mrs. Margaret Bellman, Mrs. Hubert Heinz, Mrs. W.T. Thiele, 48 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, together with other relatives and friends remain to mourn the loss of a devoted wife, mother and friend.
Funeral services were held from her late home, with Pastor Henry Vogel office, with internment in Union Cemetery. Age at time of death, 81 years, 5 months, 26 days."
