e-mail 140809 of Dave Cotton "The essay by Clara Cotton Foote is most exciting to me because it appears to be one of my Uncle Dale's sources for his book of memoirs; OR at the very least, corroborates some of what he tells in his memoirs. This Clara was the first born of Newton's children. When she speaks of mother or father she is talking about Caroline and Newton; grandparents - George W. Cotton and Rachel Smith Cotton. Clara makes reference to Grandmother [Rachel] taking "little Jerome" to visit his grandfather in New York. While there "his grandfather hired a tailor to make him a beautiful soldier's uniform and a hat with a feather to match. And Martha, the only daughter will never forget the mourning over that uniform." Gary, Eddie H and I think this corroborates the early death of Jerome in 1832 at age 8. This is another of the disputed dates on tombstones at Garfield. The stone appears to say he died in 1852."
