Richard J Straw, son of Mrs May Straw has been honorably discharged and is at the home of his mother. He entered in the service March 27, 1941 and received his training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was shipped overseas in May 1944, serving in the European Theatre of Operations in England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He was in the First Army, then was transferred to Patton's Third Army, later to Simpson's 9th Army. He wears the combat Infantry Badge, European Theatre Ribbon with five Battle stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and a pre-Pearl Harbor Ribbon, also service stripes. He expects to return to his work at Packard Woolen Co where he was employed before entering the service. PFC Straw has one brother, PFC John C Straw, now serving with Hq C. ASHLAND -- Richard J. Straw, 91, of Cottage Place, died after a sudden illness March 12, 2007, at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth.
He was born in Ashland on April 15, 1915, to Edson and May (Little) Straw.
He graduated from Ashland High School.
He then joined the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Rhineland, Northern France, Normandy, Ardennes, and Central Europe.
He returned to Ashland and married Lumina Provencher on Feb. 16, 1946, in St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church. They celebrated 61 years of marriage on Feb. 16.
He was employed as a Dresser at L.W. Packard Woolen Co. in Ashland, retiring in 1980.
He was communicant of St. Agnes Church and a member of Dupuis Cross Post 15 American Legion, the National Rifle Aassociation, Ashland Historical Society, Pemi Valley Fish & Game Club, Ashland Booster Club, and Meals on Wheels.
He was an avid gardener and enjoyed walking, hunting, fishing and watching sports.
He was predeceased by daughter Pamela Straw Bergeon.
In addition to his wife, family includes son James Straw of New Boston; daughter Judy Gilmore of Rumney; and nine grandchildren.
SERVICES: Calling hours at the Dupuis Funeral Home, Hill Avenue, Ashland, are Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Agnes Church with the Rev. Leo Leblanc as celebrant.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Agnes Church, Ashland, or to Dupuis Cross Post 15 American Legion, Main Street, Ashland 03217.
