GREENE - The funeral for Paul Flora, 108, of 219 N. Water St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, with the Rev. Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a Service of Remembrance at 7 p.m.
Paul Lester Flora was born Dec. 20, 1893, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a son of Harvey Edward and Jennie M. (Thompson) Flora, and died Thursday (July 18, 2002) at his home in Greene having attained the advanced age of 108 years, 6 months and 28 days.
He received his education at the rural country school through the eighth grade. He spent most of his life farming.
On Dec. 20, 1917, he was united in marriage to Dianna Ruth Kingery at his parents' log house in Bemidji, Minn. They were married nearly 80 years, working alongside each other on the farm, caring for each other and their family. To this union were born three daughters.
He will be remembered as a special grandfather who always took an interest in his grandchildren and their activities. Following retirement, they enjoyed spending 13 winters in Bradenton, Fla.
On Feb. 12, 1995, they received an award for being the Longest Married Couple in the State of Iowa on World Marriage Day of that year. In February 2002 Paul was honored with the distinction of being the oldest man in Iowa.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greene for more than 80 years.
Living family members include two loving daughters, Evelyn Straw, of Charles City, and Eleanor Reed, of Greene; six grandchildren, Paul Sedgwick, Donna Wunsch, Jim Reed, Barbara Botterbrodt, Gary Reed and Steve Reed; 19 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth, on June 16, 1997; daughter, Norma; four sisters, Gertrude Tack, Edna Tack, Harriet Barnett and Wilma Gallagher; and two brothers, Earl and Ray in infancy.
