FALL RIVER -- Joseph E. Farias, 76, of Swansea, formerly of Somerset, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at the Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Home. He was the husband of Marilyn C. (Straw) Farias.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Manuel and Maria (de Jesus-Cordeiro) Farias, he lived in Swansea for the last 34 years. An Army veteran of World War II, recipient of two Purple Hearts, and the Bronze Star for Bravery, he fought in the Invasion of Normandy. A member of the American Legion Swansea Post 303 for more than 40 years, he also attended Christ Church in Swansea.
He was employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a foreman for the Department of Public Works, Gardner's Neck Garage, in Swansea for more than 30 years, rearing in 1976.
Survivors include his widow; two sons, Gary P. Farias of Swansea and James E. Wishart of Dover, Del.; four daughters, Judith A. Canedy of Goffstown, N.H., Susan Boutin and Wendy Keighley, both of Somerset, and Terry-Ann Farias of Swansea; three sisters, Helen Souza of Somerset, Dorothy St. Pierre of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Somerset, and Marjorie Medeiros of Fall River; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was the brother of the late Mary Cabral, Angelina Furtado, Abel and James Farias.
There will be a funeral service in at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ Church, Main Street, Swansea. Arrangements are by the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset.
