TAMWORTH - Louise Rita Straw, 92, died Sunday, May 15, 2005, after a short stay at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro and at Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee, where she was receiving supportive services from VNA-Hospice of Southern Carroll County.
Born Oct. 22, 1912 in Haverhill, Mass., she was a daughter of Phillip and Hazel Grenon. She was raised in Haverhill and was married for 53 years to the love of her life, Lloyd E. Straw, until his death in 1981. Their life together was spent in the Haverhill area, where she worked in a shoe factory and did foster care. They retired to Tamworth in the 1970s to the family farm where they had spent their honeymoon and continued foster care work for Carroll County.
Her hobbies were many, including keeping a daily journal, sometimes expressing herself in poems, writing to pen pals, collecting stamps and news clippings, recording and accumulating a library of videos of Johnny Carson shows, comedies, historic events, Billy Graham crusades, old movies, which she always extended invitations to others to share with her.
She had two children, Lorna, who died soon after birth in 1932, and Albert W. Straw, who lives in Tamworth with his wife, Ella Mae. Five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren include David Lloyd Straw (deceased September 2004), Richard Henry Straw of Tamworth, with son Dominique and daughter Jennifer of Salisbury, Md., Robert James Straw of Tamworth and wife Edita and son Jacob Henry, who was the light of her life for the last two years, Timothy John Straw of Wallops Island, Va., with daughter Sarah, Gwendolynn Joyce Straw Satterfield of Genoa, Ill. and husband Michael and son Michael Jr.
She is survived by a sister, Lillian Dewhurst of Kittery, Maine, and her children, Barbara Bean of Rochester, N.H., Harriet Meek of Birmingham, Ala., and William Dewhurst of Nottingham; one brother, Walter Smith and wife Mary of Springfield, Tenn., and their daughter, Linda Carrillo, and son, Steven Smith.
A brother, Phillip Grenon, predeceased her; his wife, Agnes, and children, Anita Cook and Phillip Grenon III, live in Eugene, Ore.
