"Ellen Kennish was born at the Corony, Maughold, Isle of Man, May 9, 1959. At the age of ten, with her parents, William and Catherine Kennish and eleven brothers and sisters she came to Holt Co, MO, first living near Oregon, MO. In 1872 the family moved to the new home "on the prarie", now known as the New Liberty Community. As Mr. Kennish was a minister, church services were conducted in their and neighboring homes. Later the services were held in the new school house until the church was built. These buildings became the social centers of the neuighborhood. After walking home 1 1/2 miles from school, the young people returned often to the singing schools and literary societies. the family was instrumental in the organization of the Minnesota Valley Church.
At a time when neighbors were dependent upon each other, Ellen learned to take her place at the bedside of the sick and dying and to help neighbors at all times of incressed activity. Deft with needle she helped sisters and friends to make clothing for their families and sometimes for the men of the family.
In 1883 she married William Tyson and for ten years lived on the Tyson home place in the St. Oswald community. Then they bought a farm 2 miles east of Mound City, living there until 1923 when because of Mr. Tyson's failing health they moved to the present home in Mound City. Mr Tyson preceded her in death 28 years.
She became a church member in her teens and was a member of the Mound city Methodist Church 58 years.
While she took an active interest in the welfare of others, especially her many neices and nephews, she was a home-lover and never tired of the household tasks. those living with her never saw her display envy or jealousy or malicious intent.
Whenever any member of the family left home fora time, he or she awaited the final admonition which never varied; "Well take care of yourself and be good. that's all that counts."
Her survivors are a daughter, Mrs Jess Porter, a grandson William Tyson Porter, a brother Thos. K. Kennish and many nephews and neices.
Funeral services were held at the home Sunday June 17, 1951 conducted by Rev. Ned Hill, assisted by Rev. W. H. Ezell. Interment was amde im Mount Hope Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Thomas Kennish Jr, Robert Kennish, Ralph Colwell, Derbin Fleming, Marshall Dunkelberger, Edwin Tyson.
[five of her children died in infancy]
