J.W. Miller Had Practiced Medicine Here 40 YearsDr. J.W. Miller, 82 years, 6 months, and 29 days passed away last Saturday, May 4th at a St. Joseph hospital. His death follows a long illness although he had only been in the hospital a few days.He practiced medicine for forty years – in one of the noblest callings possible – that of a country doctor. And as such he merited and won the love and respect of hundreds of patients and friends. The sight of his horse and buggy jogging along the roads gave assurance to the well. His prescriptions and medical advice brought new health and courage to the ill.Sometimes the buggy was absent in bad weather. Just the Doctor astride the horse when snowdrifts were high or floods rampant. He brought hundreds of babies into the world. He assuaged the aches and dulled the pains of the aged. His visits brought cheer, hope, health. On occasions, he would be away from his own home for days at a time going from patient to patient sleeping in snatches in the buggy. The telephone directed him from bedside to bedside. He was a country doctor. He met all emergencies with calm sure judgment. Human life was in his hands. And of himself, he gave without stint. Often tired and worn, he made his rounds; it was more important to him to heal the sick than to take the rest Dr. Miller needed. This community will always revere his memory. He was born in Adams County, Illinois, October 5, 1856, and attended school there. After graduation he went to Henry County and taught school for three years. In 1879, he studied medicine in Iowa City. He married Ada Hawkins, September 9, 1880. Three years later he graduated in medicine from Jefferson College, March 1, 1883.He brought his family to Mound City in 1896 and practiced medicine here until his retirement from active practice a few years ago.He is survived by his wife. Four sons preceded him in death: Dr. R.R. Miller who died in August 1938: twin sons, Edgar who passed away in 1914 and Edwin who passed away in 1885; and Dr. Max Mayo Miller who died in 1931. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Nelson Miller, Tulsa, Okla., Dr Max Miller, New Orleans; Ted and Wm. Miller, Arkansas City, Kansas; Edgar, New York City and Abe, Mound City.Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, May 6 at the Pettijohn & Crawford Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Fred J. Nold, pastor of the Methodist church.Pall bearers were: A.B. Caton, Geo. McRoberts, Bruce Thomas, Clyde Thompson, Henry Aeby, Dwight Louchs.Internment was in Mount Hope cemetery.
