The son of Marcus "Mark" Gillette and Sarah "Sally" Dudley, Elmore was originally from Ticonderoga, New York. He married an Irish immigrant named Margaret A. "Maggie" Carroll about 1872.
Elmore and Maggie were the parents of 2 children during the time they lived in New York. Elmore worked as a miner while they lived there.
In the very early 1880's, the Gillettes moved to Calhoun County, Illinois where 2 more children were born. The family suffered a terrible loss while living in Calhoun when, in 1882, their only daughter died at the age of 3.
By 1900, Elmore moved his family to St. Louis, Missouri where he worked as a foreman in a pottery works. Known for the outstanding quality of its clay, St. Louis employed many men in the local brickyards. Elmore later took a job with a glass works company in St. Louis.
At the time of his death due to diabetes, Elmore was 65 years, 7 months and 6 days old. His Missouri death certificate and obituaries indicate that he was buried at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis on 22 Feb 1917. However, cemetery records give his final resting place as St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Brussels, Calhoun County, Illinois--the same cemetery where his young daughter was buried in 1882.
Elmore was survived by his wife, Maggie, who passed away in 1930. She was also buried at St. Mary's, as was a son, George, after his death in 1933.
Children: 3 sons, 1 daughter.

Note: Elmore's brother, Charles Ellery Gillette, was married to Maggie's sister, Elizabeth Jane Carroll.
