Township number three, in range eight, was on petition of JOHN PORTER and others, established March 8, 1808. As formed it was six miles square. On the fourth day of April 1808, the electors met at the house of Henry Maxon and elected the following officers: Henry Maxon, clerk; Thomas Stanley, JOHN PORTER and Resolved Fuller,trustees...
He served in the war of 1812, but later moved to Athens Co,OH,where he worked on the construction of the court house and buildings of Ohio University. He was a master carpenter by trade. (From Unknown Settlement by Herbert Roush, 1983)
John R. Porter,another of Ebenezer's sons, served as a p;rivate in Captain Timothy Buell's Company of mounted militia. This company was raised August 1, 1813, under Major General Harrison.

The jail building on lot no 37 becoming inadequate,John Porter and John Walker were employed, in March of 1819, for $130 to partition off a room about 12 foot square, in the north west corner of the second story of the court house, with two inch oak planks laid double, to be used as a jail. This room was used until 1826.
