bullet  General Notes:

Research of J. Therkildsen on www.rootsweb.com:

Hugo was born in northern Germany in what is now the state of Lower Saxony. The family farmstead was on the west side of the Weser River, north (downriver) of Bremen.
The family story is this: He was scholarly inclined and well educated. In the 1840's and early 1850s, Germany was not yet united and the city states were fighting each other. The military was important; his brothers were so inclined, he was not, so he alone of his family left the country, receiving his share of the wealth.
The umlaut u in German is "ue" in English, so as soon as he came to America his Lubben name would have changed to Luebben. He came in 1853 to Wisconsin, and may have followed or come with an uncle or cousin.
Aurilla was born in Van Wert County, Ohio. The Culver family had moved to Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, in 1847.
On their 1856 marriage certificate Hugo's residence was Manitowoc which is north of Sheboygan. At one time they may have lived in Sheboygan Falls. In 1865 they were in the City of Sheboygan, north of the Sheboygan River, west of Lake Michigan. There is a family story of an unusual mirage they once saw across Lake Michigan of a railroad train traveling along, in the sky just above the lake, the train being upside down. An 1875-76 Sheboygan City Directory showed him as "hub machine maker at Center and 6th Street," which is the location of the Court House. Sons Melchior and Ummo, who were inventors, would carry on this penchant for working with metal.
They made one trip to Germany, which was before his mother died in Bremen. Their twin sons Hugh H. and Harrison F. were born during this visit. They returned on the ship "New York" from Bremen to New York, arriving Sep 15 1862.
They had one daugher, Mary, and five sons. Mary was said to be small boned and pretty, like her mother. Hugo was probably stocky. The five sons ranged in height from short to over 6 ft. Aurilla was good at telling family stories. One (by her, or perhaps by Mary) was of an unusual sight they once saw, a clear mirage across Lake Michigan of a railroad train traveling along, in the sky just above the lake, the train being upside down.
They came to Nebraska 1878. Hugo bought the 160 acres of railroad company land from CB&Q in "I" Precinct, Seward County, west of Lincoln, east of Curtis & Mary Luebben Beach. Aurilla planted one half mile of mulberry seed along the road. The agriculture report on the 1885 census showed that the previous year Hugo had 105 acres of "unbroken pasture" and 40 of "Indian corn" (meaning corn, not wheat) which averaged 50 bushels per acre, 2 horses, 2 milch cows plus 12 other, none slaughtered the previous year for beef (nobody in that census seemed to have eaten beef); 45 swine and 15 poultry.
They were Baptists. In later years, they may have moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. Hugo died in Lincoln, Aurilla at her daughter Mary's at Broadview.
Their biography is in the 1982 Seward County History..
