Family settled in Nelsonville in 1822 when Samuel started
the first tannery. He was a native of MA and came to Athens
county at the age of 48. He died in 1832, ten years after
locating in York Twp. (Athens County,The Harris History,pg63)

Samuel married Abigail Porter, daughter of Nathan Porter and Lydia Goodridge. (Abigail Porter was born in 1777 in Brookfield, Massachusetts and died in 1846.)
