From the Ahnapee Record, Thursday, 16 Feb 1888. Death of Oliver G. Rouse
He dies of heart disease very suddenly at the home of his son-in-law at Marinette. Oliver G. Rouse, an old settler of Wi and for a number of years a resident of this city, died of heart disease at the home of his son-in-law, Frank McDonald in Marinette, last Sunday and was buried in Tweeddale's cemetery yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Rouse was born in Muskindon County OH (Muskingon) 2 April 1816, and came to WI more than 50 years ago. He located in Milwaukee where he lived for about eight years, and from there he moved to Racine when that city was yet in infancy. He engaged in harbor work during his residence in Racine and helped to build the first pier in that place. From Racine he moved to Two Rivers about the year 1856 and from there came north as far as Kewaunee, a few years later.
On 12 Oct 1861, he enlisted as a private in Co. E 14th RegimentWisconsin Volunteers, and served with honor until the close of the war, being mustered out with his regiment in Oct 1865, having been promoted to the rank of Sergeant during his term of service. At the close of the war he settled on a farm now owned by John Van Vranken, in Pierce town, and lived there until 1876, when he moved to this city. He was twice married and was the father of six children, four daughters and two sons. Neither of the sons is living, one of them ,Edwin, having died in the Army. After the death of his second wife, which occurred about nine years ago, he disposed of his property here and went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Chauncey R. Thayer of Thayerport, where he lived until last August. He took up his residence with his youngest daughter, Mrs Frank McDonald of Marinette.
His death, though sudden, was peaceful and unattended by any pain or suffering, he arose early on the morning of his death, and built a fire as was his custom, he spoke to some of his family while thus occupied
and appeared to be in his usual health and spirits. He returned to bed after the fire was built, and when his daughter went to call him about 9 o'clock she was shocked to find him dead. In compliance with his oft expressed wishes, his remains were brought to this city and buried beside those of his wife, in Tweedale Cemetery. The service was
conducted by Rev. H. Overbrook, in the Baptist Church, under the auspices of the Temple of Honor of this city , and the G.A.R. Post of Forestville, of both of which organizations he was a worthy and esteemed member, and the large number of citizens present attest the sincere esteem in which he was held by those who knew him here.
His surviving children are Mrs. Darius Rowley, East Chain Lake, Minn, Mrs. Hurton (Hutton or Hinton)?, Mrs. Chauncey Thayer of Sturgeon Bay and Mrs. Frank McDonald of Marinette.
