Rowse, Samuel E. (Veteran.) Age 35. Residence Independence, nativity Ohio. Enlisted March 6, 1862. Mustered March 6, 1862. Re-enlisted and re-mustered March 7, 1864. See company G, Fifth Cavalry.

Obit in The Correctionville News, 11 July 1918, page 1: Samuel E. Rowse died at his home in Correctionville on Monday, July 8, 1918. He was born in Bucyrus, Crawford Co., Ohio, and came to Iowa when a mere child, settling at Independence where he grew to manhood. When seventeen years old he answered the call of his country and entered military service March 6, 1862, when he volunteered as a member of Company E, 5th Iowa Infantry. He received an honorable discharge in 1864 and at once re-enlisted in Company G, 5th Iowa Cavalry, serving until the close of the war, when he was mustered out August 1, 1865. Although he was wounded, he was in some of the battles of the Rebellion. He was at the Siege of Vicksburg, and the battles of Iuka, Corinth, and others. At the close of the war he returned to Independence where he was married June 12, 1881, to Miss Betsy Bourgaize, who survives him. To them were born two sons and two daughters, Mrs. E.L. Cobb of Correctionville, Mrs. C.M. Lilly of Sioux City, William Rowse, and Rupert, who is a member of the 477th Aero construction Squadron of the U.S. Expeditionary Force in France. He is also survived by two sisters, Miss Mary Rowse and Mrs. Emile Wing of Independence, Iowa, who were present at the funeral. There are also three brothers, Reuben Rowse of Wheatland, Wyoming, Rupert of Independence and Hansom of Hutchinson, Kansas. Memorial services were held Wednesday morning in the M.E. Church conducted by Rev. Masters. The remains were laid to rest in the Correctionville Cemetery.
