From Springfield Republican pub. Feb 3, 1906: The will of John D. Smith, late of Dalton, was filed yesterday in the probate court. The estate was appraised at about $8000. After minor bequests to a number of relatives, the remainder of the estate is to be divided among the following persons: Sarah Bardin [sister] of Dalton, Elizabeth Parker of Plainfield [sister], Elmira M Bardin of Dalton [niece, dtr of Sarah], Eva Cook of Hinsdale [could be niece, dau. of brother Williard S.], Hattie Parker of Plainfield [could be niece, dtr of sister Elizabeth], Mary E Sherman of Westfield [he died in her home, a niece], and LeRoy P. Adams of Dalton [step-grandson]. The latter is named executor of the will. [No record of this will was found in the Probate index at Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Mass.]

Co., 1906 beginning on page 249: "John D. Smith, of Dalton, Berkshire county, Massachusetts, a veteran of the civil war, was born at Goat Island, Niagara Falls, New York, March 18, 1835.... the second of the thirteen children born to Asa and Sarah L. Smith, was six years of age when his parents removed to Dalton. Berkshire county. He attended school for a short period of time during his first five years residence in Dalton, but was soon utilized by his father in the wood business which he conducted in connection with the operation of a farm in the locality known as Goosebill, the family having given that name to the place. At the age of fourteen years he was apprenticed to the carpenter and machinist trades, serving for four years. He then learned the trade of millwright, and the greater part of his business career was devoted to that occupation. He was employed by the Byron Weston Company in Dalton, Massachusetts, for eighteen consecutive years. He has served the county as a deputy sheriff for five terms, and as constable in the township for ten years. His religious views are in accord with those adopted by the Methodist Episcopal church, and his political affiliations are with the Republican party. In 1862 he enlisted in Company K, Thirty-fourth Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry, from Dalton, and was promoted to the rank of first corporal in the company. He participated in seventeen battles and skirmishes, the most severe having been the battle of Fort Gregg on April 2, 1865. In 1860 Mr. Smith was married to Lucy K. Adams, of Landesfield, Massachusetts, who is now deceased. Mr. Smith now makes his home with his sister, Mrs. Sarah Bardin, of Dalton, Massachusetts."
from January 27, 1906, Springfield Republican, pg 10: John D Smith, 71, died early yesterday morning at the home of his niece, Mrs Clark Sherman. Mr Smith was a resident of Dalton, but had been in Westfield on a visit. He was taken sick Sunday night with heart trouble. The body was taken to Dalton yesterday afternoon and the funeral will be held Monday.
from January 29, 1906, Springfield Republican, pg 9: The funeral of John D Smith, who died Friday morning in Westfield, will be held to-day. Prayer will be offered at the home of his sister, Mrs. Sarah Bardin of Depot Street at 1.30, and the funeral will be held at the Methodist Church at 2 o'clock. Rev. Edwin Genge will officiate. The burial service at Main street cemetery will be in charge of Rockwell Grand Army post.
from Berkshire Eagle Monday Jan 29, 1906 page 29: John D Smith's Funeral The funeral of John D. Smith was held at the Methodist church this afternoon at 2 o'clock and was largely attended. Rev. Edwin Genge officiated. The singing was by a quartet consisting of Miss Grace Genge, Mrs Milton Haskell, Robert Whitaker and Joseph Brooks. The funeral was in charge of the W W Rockwell post G. A. R. and the bearers were members of the post. The burial took place in the Main street cemetery.
