Civil War Veteran
Co. E, 18th Massachusetts Infantry
The son of Asa and Sarah (Straw) Smith, both born in Niagra, NY. He enlisted and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. K. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal prior to Dec. 13, 1862. Smith was wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1861, and one of nine men of Co. K cited for their courage during the battle. He was discharged due to his wounds on Jan. 19, 1863.
