CHAPEL HILL -- Dr. Gregory M. Straw, 49, died unexpectedly Monday, May 24, at his home in Chapel Hill, NC, of cardiac arrest. Dr. Greg Straw was a graduate of Purdue University and The Ohio State University College of Medicine. His medical and psychiatric residencies were completed through Wayne State University in Detroit where he began his practice in child psychiatry. He accepted a fellowship in research with the National Institute of Mental Health in Washington, DC for 4 years before joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1989.

In recent years he presented his research to professional conferences in Germany, Japan, and throughout the United States. He was known in the Research Triangle as a wonderful caregiver and talented psychoneurobiologist with an exceptional ability to diagnose and treat difficult psychiatric problems. In addition to his practices throughout North Carolina, Dr. Straw shared his affection and his professional services with the students and faculty at Wellspring Institute of Leadership in Virginia, where the students will be planting a tree in his memory.
Dr. Straw was intensely devoted to his family. He and Elizabeth shared a love of music and the arts, as well as a passion for learning, all of which they passed on to their children. He loved sculpting and traveling, and was an accomplished pianist and guitarist. He will be deeply mourned by his family, friends, and the communities he served.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Walkers Funeral Home.
