obit Alice Sophie Amanda Stade Straw, 91, of Buffalo Center, passed away at the Good Samaritan Home in Forest City, Iowa, Saturday May 1, 2010. Funeral Services were held Thursday May 6 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center, with Pastor Perry Aalgaard Officiating. Burial was at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Beresford, SD. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be designated to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center. Alice was born October 5, 1918 and raised on a farm near Farmersburg, Iowa. She attended the Farmersburg public schools. Alice was married to Glen W. Frey and they had one daughter, Mary Ann Frey. They also adopted one son named Arvid Frey, a WWII Latvian Orphan. On January 20, 1968, Alice married Dwayne Straw. We call her "Our family's little white haired social butterfly" as she loved being with people. As a young girl, growing up in eastern Iowa, near the Mississippi River, she enjoyed it's beautiful scenery. As an adult she looked forward to annual visits to her childhood home area, when she would get the chance to visit with family. "Grandma" as many called her, from many neighborhood kids to many adult friends; "Grandma Alice" was an icon of Grandmas. Grandma Alice took on a variety of positions during her working years: a ladies retail store manager, a dental assistant, a home-town drug sales clerk, a newspaper co-owner, and a funeral home visitation assistant- hostess. Grandma Alice's interests were visible when she baked many- 100's of melt-in-your-mouth sugar cookies, prepared top notch meals for family and friends and hosted may at-home coffee luncheons for her friends as the coffee was always brewing. Grandma lovingly tended to her flowers and took pleasure in growing and harvesting her garden. She was an expert knitter and a proficient hand embroidier, creating beautiful towels to treasure forever. A strong faith in her Heavenly Savior was evident and church life was a significant priority in her life. She loved attending church services at Bethlehem Lutheran and it's loving congregation gave her much happiness. Among her survivors who shared her life are daughter Mary Ann (Don) Bartz of Forest City, IA; grandson Don G. (Catherine) Bartz of Coppell, TX; granddaughter Carolyn Bartz of Buffalo Center, IA; great grandchildren Jacob Bartz of Coppell, TX; Alec Ostrander of Buffalo Center, IA; and Jordan Ostrander of Buffalo Center, IA; sisters-in-law Anita Stade of Garnivillo, IA; Helen Stade of Marquette, IA; and Darleen Kinyon of Plankinton, SD; step-children Clint Straw; Bradley Straw; Brenda Pederson; and Linda Lowrie; many step-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews ; and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dwayne Straw; son Arvid Frey; 4 brothers: Almore Stade; Harold Stade; Lorance Stade; Clarence Stade; and sister-in-law Evelyn Stade.
