Barbara H. Burkhart, 81

CUMBERLAND, R.I. - Barbara H. Burkhart died Feb. 6, 2008 at the Emerald Bay Manor Nursing Center. She was 81. Barbara was born in New York City on Aug. 28, 1926. She graduated from Tully High School in Tully, N.Y. and St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Upon graduation from college, she was employed as a case worker for the County Board of Welfare in Monmouth, N.J.
She married Richard H. Burkhart on Aug. 27, 1949 in Farmingdale, N.J.
For 32 years they resided in Darien, Conn., where they raised their 3 children, before retiring to The Moorings, Vero Beach, Fla. where they lived from 1981- 2002.
Her husband died in 2000 and Barbara moved back to Connecticut in 2002 and resided at Sterling Glen of Darien, and subsequently at The Waveny Care Center in New Canaan. Most recently, she lived near her daughter Pamela, at Hearthstone Alzheimers Care in Hopkinton, Mass.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, Earl and Charlotte Hillman and her sister Nancy H. Terry.
Barbara was a dedicated volunteer for much of her adult life. In Darien she volunteered with the Girl Scouts of America and the American Red Cross. She was Director of Volunteers for the Rehabilitation Center of Fairfield County and was the proud recipient of The Volunteer of the Year Award.
In Vero Beach, Barbara volunteered at the Vero Beach Thrift Shop and was an active member of the Vero Beach Methodist Church. She and her husband were active skeet and trap shooters and were avid boaters throughout their 50-year marriage.
Most importantly, Barbara cherished her family and friends.
She is survived by her loving children, Pamela Mele of Wrentham, Mass., Michael Burkhart of Darien, Linda Fry of Concord, N.H. as well as her devoted daughter-in-law, Prudence Burkhart, her sons-in-laws, John Mele and James Fry and seven grandchildren. Barbara is also survived by her brother, David Hillman of Penacook, N.H.
At the family's request, there will be no service. A memorial gathering for immediate family will be private, with interment in Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Barbara H. Burkhart may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave. Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
